Asquith family merged with the Associated Dairies company of Yorkshire. In 1999 it was acquired by the American retail giant Walmart. Asda is the second-largest supermarket chain in Britain, a position ir regained in April 2019, behind Tesco and ahead of Sainsbury's.

Since then, Lidl UK has grown consistently, and today has over 760 stores. While it is still a small player in the UK with a grocery market share of less than 5%, its importance, along with that of continental, no frills competitor Aldi is growing.

Morrisons, is the fourth largest chain of supermarkets in the UK, and is headquartered in Bradford.... Founded in 1899 by William Morrison, it began as an egg and butter stall in Rawson Market, Bradford. Until 2004, Morrisons store locations were primarily focused in the North of England, but with the takeover of Safeway in that year, the company's presence increased significantly in the South of England, Wales and Scotland.

In 2010, Sainsbury's opened one of its largest UK shops, an extension of its existing shop in Crayford, South East London, which now has over 100,000 sq ft of retail space and is the largest supermarket to be built in the UK.

The company has a royal warrant to supply groceries, wine, and spirits to the Queen.
